Help
Is this service free?
Yes! everything is free : adding an item, checking the offers, etc. And there is no commision of the items that are sold either.
How can I see the items for sale?
Simply click on one of the 25 cents coins - "List items for sale" or "Looking for..." - on the main page and then go down to the category in question. The categories with names in bold type have sub-categories. Once you click on a category with its name in normal type, a list of items will then be displayed. You can also do a search. Note that you must have your graphics turned on in your browser to use the site correctly.
How do I add an item?
There are two ways to add an item : directly or with the lists of items. To add an item directly, click on the first 10 cents coin "add an item" on the main page. A general index of the site will then be displayed, click on the name of the corresponding category and a form will be displayed. Follow the steps from 2 to 6 and that's it. To add through the lists of items, follow the steps from 1 to 6.
- You have to go to the corresponding category of your item (click on one of the 25 cents coins - "List items for sale" or "Looking for..." - on the main page and then go down to the category in question. The categories with names in bold type have sub-categories). Then click on the "Add item" button at the top of the page, a form will be displayed.
- You then have the enter the initial price, this will be the initial offer displayed next to your item. The offers will have to be higher if it's an item for sale or lower is you are looking for the item. You can not, for the moment, change the initial offer once it is added to the site, you must be careful not to ask too much if you are selling something or offer too little if you are looking for something otherwise you won't get any offers. But you don't have to specify an amount, you can leave it blank and the first offer made will be accepted. The inital price can not be more than 9 digits long (including the decimals altough they are not mandatory), there can't be more than 2 decimals and they have to be separated by a period, not a comma.
- You can indicate how someone who is interested can contact you for more information. For example, if the item you are seeling is a car, then the potential buyer might want more information before making an offer. You can give your telephone number or e-mail address but it is not mandatory.
- The password however is mandatory, you need a password to check the offers or to remove the item. The password has to be at least one character long but not more than 10 characters. It can contain numbers and/or letters.
- The description of the item is the most important part of the ad. The description must be at least 1 character long but at most 512 characters. It can contain simple HTML tags (<b>word</b> for bold characters, <u>word</u> for italic, <ul><li>element<li>element</ul> to make a list and <br> to break the line and <p> for a paragraph), but the <img ...> tage will not be tolerated. Remember, if you are a store or business owner, you must mention it by law.
- Click on the "Add the item" button.
If I am selling an item as part of my business, do I have to say so?
Yes, article 242 of the consumer protection law states that a business or store owner can't hide its identity as a business in an ad. So you have to mention that you are a business (and also add the name of that business).
How do I make an offer?
- For each item listed in a category, there is a "Make an offer" link under the latest offer that you can click on, the fom to make an offer will then be displayed.
- You have the enter your offer. The offer has to be higher if it's an item for sale or lower is it's an ad for an item someone is looking for. The offer also has to be at least $1 higher (or lower depending on the type of ad) than the latest offer but lower than $100 higher (or lower...) to prevent abuses. The offer can not be more than 9 digits long (including the decimals altough they are not mandatory), there can't be more than 2 decimals and they have to be separated by a period, not a comma.
- You must indicate how you can be contacted if the offer is accepted. You can either give your e-mail address or your telephone number.
- Click on the "Make the offer" button.
How can I check the offers?
- Click on the 5 cents coin "Check the offers" on the main page, a form will then be displayed. Enter the reference number and the password of the item (they were given when you added the item).
- You can then click on one of the three buttons : "Today" to get today's offers, "This week" to get this week's offers and "All the offers" to get all the offers.
- The list of offers, if any, will then be displayed, the most recent offers are at the bottom of the list. For each offer, you will see the amount of the offer and the telephone number or e-mail address of the person who made that offer (you can click on the e-mail address to send an e-mail).
How can I remove an item?
- Click on the second 10 cents coin "Remove an item" on the main page, a form will then be displayed. Enter the reference number and the password of the item (they were given when you added the item). The item will then be removed but the offers will remain available for some time.
How do I do a search?
Click on the 1 cent coin on the main page, then select one or more category to search. To select more than one category, press the CTRL key while selecting the category names. If you select "all" (the default value), all the categories will be searched but this will slow down the search. Then select the section to be searched, "for sale" for searching the lists of items for sale or "looking for..." to look for items that other people are looking for... Then enter the keyword(s) that describes the item that you are looking for, if you use more than one keyword, then separate them with spaces. Do not use quotation marks. You can also limit the search to items that have a last offer inferior, for example if you are searcing in the "for sale" section, to the amount you specify. Then click on the "search" button and that's it.
What are those buttons at the top of the pages (category and item list)?
there are three buttons for the category list and four for the items list. The three buttons for the categories are : "Help" to see this page, "For sale" or "Looking for..." to go to the other section (example : if you are in the "For sale" section, you can go to the same category but in the "Looking for..." section by clicking on that button) and "English" or "Français" to go from the english version to the french version or vice-versa. The four items list buttons are the same except for the "Add d'item" button that lets you add an item to the site for the category.
I added an item but I don't see it!
The ads for the items are added automatically to the site but you have to click on the "reload" button of your browser to see it.
My item doesn't fit in any category, what should I do?
If you can't find any category that corresponds to your item, you can send a suggestion for a new category to info@toutmontreal.com. You will be contacted if the new category is open.
