The most interesting museum that helps to understand Montreal's history is the Musée d'archéologie et d'histoire de Montréal-Pointe-à-Callière which was actually built over the spot where Montreal was founded, it's also where the cities first cemetary is located and the remnants of two buildings can be found, all in different layers. For a lighter look at Montreal's history, there's the Centre d'histoire de Montréal.
