This section could be called "Montreal for under $75 a day" (hotel and three meals included). Eventhough the section is short, it is none the less complete since it links to other special sections of the guide. The first thing you need to know is where to get free information before you come here and once you are here.
Then, you need to find a place to stay. The cheapest place is the dorm at the Collège Francais. There's also the Montreal Youth Hostel (international youth hostel) another one (Auberge Alternative du Vieux-Montréal) located in old Montreal. If you don't like those, the b&b are are usually inexpensive, altough a little more expensive then the dorm rooms. You can click here to get a full list of hotels rooms (or dorms or b&b) for under $50 a night.
For restaurants, you can get a great meal for under $10, if you know where to look. The best thing is to eat a big lunch (even the more expensive restaurants have an inexpensive lunch special) and eat a smaller dinner at one of the restaurants listed. Here's a list of recommended restaurants for under $10 (you can get a full list of restaurants under $10 by clicking here).
Finally, there are the free activities and museums. Summertime is usually ideal for free activities since most festivals have free outdoor events. The Montreal International Jazz Festival is the best example with hundreds or free outdoor shows (around the Place-des-Arts). The Festival International du Cinéma et des Nouveaux Médias de Montréal (international film and new medias festival) and the Montreal International Film Festival have free outdoor film screenings. As, for museums, here's a list of free museums
and exhibitions (or rebates on museums).
That's it, so enjoy your visit and keep that money in your wallet.
