| Should I bring my passport? Do I need a visa or identification card? |
It depends. If you are a Canadian citizen, you don't need a passport (!) or special ID (although it's always a good idea to bring a photo ID like a driver's license...).
If you are a US citizen or a permanent US citizen (with your "green card"), you won't need a passport to visit Canada until 2008 for all trips. As of December 31 2006, you will need a passport for plane or boat trips to Canada. After December 31 2007, americans will need a passport for all trips to Canada. For the moment, you only need a valid ID or a proof of US citizenship (preferably one with your picture, your drivers license for instance). For more information, visit the U.S. Department of State's web site .
You only need a visa (and a passport) if you come from certain countries, a list of these countries can be found on Immigration Canada's web site . But if you are not from the US or Canada and not part of the list (most European countries are not included in this list), you will still need a passport (but no visa). You'll find all the information you need to fill out a request for a visitor visa on that site. For a complete list of Canadian embassies and missions abroad, check out the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada's web site . If you plan on moving to Canada, again the Immigration Canada web site has all the information you will need. You can also check the list of immigration consultants' web site on moreMontreal.com web directory.
