There is a tour bus line [Murray Hill and Gray Line] (the buses look like old tramways or streetcars) that have different bus tours. You can buy a ticket (which is valid all day) and you can get off anywhere you want and then take the next tour bus that passes by. They usually start at the Square Dorchester (Info-Touriste office). The tour buses where the driver makes the comments are not always the best way to visit (although there are exceptions). Some of those bus drivers don't always give interesting or informative comments on the city. Try to take a bus where a tour guide comments (not the driver...). There are some specialized guided tours that are available, for instance if you're interested in architecture (there's the Heritage Montreal tours) or ethnic or working class communities (there's the L'Autre Montréal tours) or want an "alternative" tour of Montreal (there's Confidential Montreal, for information call 249-4023 or 270-8840). The Plateau Mont-Royal district also has its own tours (check out their web site). You have also boat tours (starting from the eastern part of the old port in old Montreal at the L'Horloge pier) or by plane (expensive). For more complete information, ask Info-Touriste at Dorchester square downtown (most tours start from there anyway).
