The area code 514 covers the island of Montreal only and 450 covers the suburbs of Laval and the north shore and the south shore. A new area code, 438, will take effect in 2006.
10 digit local dialing is now mandatory. This mean you have to include the area code when you are dialing even if you are calling someone in the same area code. For more information, you can visit Dial10.ca .
Pay phones are 25 cents but you can pay with a call card or even a credit card (those phones have a blue slot where you can slip in your card under the numeric keypad) but it will then charge you 75 cents. You can also buy a phone card (or carte d'appel in French), it's a prepaid phone card ($10 usually) that debits every time you use it (it's 25 cents for local calls but you can also make long distance calls, the phone that accept those cards have a yellow slot). Those cards are available at most convenience stores (dépanneurs).
If you are looking for a phone number, there's the Canada 411 site, it works for individuals and companies. For the yellow pages, there's the Canada's
Yellow Pages site. Or if you are in Montreal, the 411 information service is also available.
